If you see your state mentioned below, find the legislators who made it happen and thank them. This can be done via their campaign contact form, social media, email, or even a phone call to their office. It takes five minutes. If you don’t see your state, do the same thing but tell your reps to get with the program. Copy the policy. Use the same language. Show them you expect them to pass the bill. Oligarchs never stop lobbying, neither should we.
The president spent 2025 blowing up civilians, sending federal agents to invade American cities, mocking murdered people, and dancing to the YMCA at official military events. You already know. We’ve been drowning in it.
So let’s ignore that seditious you-know-what for a minute and talk about what actually got accomplished this year.
States did things. Important things. Love them or hate them, they all come from the one political party that actually engages in governance.
Let’s start with wages, because that’s where the money is.
New York’s labor department can now seize wage thieves’ bank accounts. Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation allowing New York to levy employer assets, sell their property, and take money directly from their accounts when they steal wages, no marshal fees required.¹ A 15% surcharge applies to employers who don’t pay up.² In California, Senator Aisha Wahab authored SB 261, imposing triple damages for wage theft when employers refuse to pay judgments for six or more months.³ Governor Gavin Newsom signed it.⁴ Oregon passed what may be the most aggressive construction wage theft law in the country. Senator Floyd Prozanski sponsored SB 426, making property owners and general contractors jointly liable for unpaid wages at any subcontractor tier, with the attorney general empowered to sue directly.⁵ Governor Tina Kotek signed it.⁶ These are mechanisms to actually collect.
Workers need their wages. Families need childcare to earn them.
New Mexico became the first state in American history to offer free universal childcare to all families regardless of income.⁷ Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham made this her signature issue since her 2018 campaign.⁸ Senator Michael Padilla carried the constitutional amendment through the Senate for six years. Representative Antonio “Moe” Maestas shepherded it through 25 House committees over nine years.⁹ The program launched November 1, 2025, funded by a $10 billion trust fund built from oil and gas revenue, saving families roughly $12,000 per child per year.¹⁰ We did this during World War II with the Lanham Act, and then Congress killed the program to push women out of the workforce and give their jobs back to men. Seventy years later, New Mexico proved we can do it again whenever we decide to. If you live in New Mexico, call Lujan Grisham’s office and tell them you see their work. If you don’t, call your governor and ask why they haven’t done the same.
Childcare keeps people working. But work doesn’t matter if you can’t afford the medication that keeps you alive.
California launched CalRx insulin at $11 per pen, available January 2026.¹¹ Comparable products cost $88 or more.¹² Senator Richard Pan, a pediatrician, authored the original CalRx legislation.¹³ Governor Newsom signed it and invested $50 million in state funds.¹⁴ The state contracted with a nonprofit manufacturer to produce state-branded insulin and sells it directly to residents.¹⁵ When the federal government strips away resources, states can just make the drugs themselves.
Washington State sends naloxone for free to anyone who requests it.¹⁶ Washington didn’t stop at free overdose medication. The state went on a legislative tear.
Washington State capped rent increases statewide. Governor Bob Ferguson signed HB 1217 in May, limiting annual rent hikes to 7% plus inflation or 10%, whichever is lower.¹⁷ Manufactured home residents get a 5% cap with no expiration.¹⁸ Representative Emily Alvarado of West Seattle sponsored it.¹⁹ Washington became only the third state with statewide rent control, after Oregon and California.²⁰ Landlords can no longer jack rent 40% between leases because they feel like it.
Washington also became one of three states where striking workers can collect unemployment. Senator Marcus Riccelli of Spokane pushed SB 5041 through, providing up to six weeks of benefits for workers on strike or locked out.²¹ Only New York and New Jersey had this before.²² When Boeing machinists walked off the job, they had to rely on union strike funds and savings. Future strikers won’t face the same choice between their mortgage and their leverage.
Medical debt can no longer appear on credit reports in Washington. SB 5480, also sponsored by Riccelli, makes any reported medical debt void and unenforceable.²³ Medical bills are the number one cause of bankruptcy in America.²⁴ Nearly one in three Washington families carried medical debt.²⁵ Now it can’t follow them.
The state also passed one of the strongest right-to-repair laws in the country. HB 1483, sponsored by Representative Mia Gregerson, requires manufacturers to provide parts, tools, and documentation.²⁶ It bans parts pairing, the practice of using software to disable components that weren’t purchased from the manufacturer.²⁷ iFixit called it the strongest repair law yet passed anywhere.²⁸
Ferguson also signed an executive order requiring Project Labor Agreements on all state-funded infrastructure projects over $35 million.²⁹ Union wages and union protections, baked into the contract before the first shovel hits dirt. If you live in Washington, Representative Alvarado, Senator Riccelli, Representative Gregerson, and Governor Ferguson made this happen. Let them know you noticed.
While states built worker protections, cities and states also built infrastructure that competes directly with corporate monopolies.
Also in 2025, municipal broadband hit wider adoption. California’s Middle-Mile Broadband Initiative has installed over 3,000 miles of state-owned fiber backbone.³⁰ Superior, Wisconsin launched a city-owned gigabit network despite being in a state that actively restricts municipal broadband.³¹ Boulder broke ground on 300 miles of fiber.³² Chico started building a network offering speeds up to 10 Gbps.³³ Publicly owned networks delivering faster internet at lower prices than the monopolies that have gouged us for decades while also creating non-tax revenue to fund social safety nets.
The same logic applies to banking.
Public Bank East Bay hired Scott Waite as its first CEO in 2023, the first new public bank to hire a chief executive in over a century, and now expects to file its charter application soon.³⁴ CalAccount, California’s universal banking program, received its first implementation funding in July 2025.³⁵ North Dakota’s public bank has been profitable for 106 consecutive years.³⁶ This year we finally started building more of them.
Public infrastructure is one lever. Labor power is another.
California passed a law allowing 800,000 rideshare drivers to unionize and bargain collectively.³⁷ Assemblymembers Buffy Wicks and Marc Berman authored AB 1340. Senator Dave Cortese managed it through the Senate.³⁸ Governor Newsom signed it.³⁹ Massachusetts voters approved sectoral bargaining for rideshare, meaning when enough drivers organize, one union represents all drivers statewide against all companies.⁴⁰ Sectoral bargaining is how labor works in most wealthy democracies, and we’re finally catching up.
California also passed an NLRB backup law that might matter more than any of these in the long run. Assemblymember Tina McKinnor authored AB 288.⁴¹ When the National Labor Relations Board fails to act on unfair labor practice charges, California’s state labor board can now step in and enforce labor law for private sector workers.⁴² New York passed similar legislation, authored by Senator Jessica Ramos and Assemblymember Harry Bronson.⁴³ Governor Hochul signed it.⁴⁴ The Trump administration sued to block both laws.⁴⁵ California is fighting it in court. New York’s law was temporarily enjoined by a federal judge in November, but the state is appealing.⁴⁶ These states are building parallel enforcement infrastructure and forcing the fight.
Labor rights require funding. Massachussetes found the money by taxing the people who have more than enough of it.
Massachusetts’s 4% millionaire surtax generated $5.7 billion over its first two fiscal years, more than double what was budgeted, funding bridge repairs, transit, and education.⁴⁷ Senator Jason Lewis and Representative Jim O’Day spent years shepherding it through four constitutional convention votes before it reached the ballot.⁴⁸ The “they’ll leave” argument was always a threat, not a prediction, and Massachusetts called the bluff.
States taxed the rich. Cities are also using their pension funds to force corporate accountability.
New York City Comptroller Brad Lander recommended dropping BlackRock, Fidelity, and PanAgora as pension fund asset managers over inadequate climate plans.⁴⁹ BlackRock alone manages $42.3 billion for city pension funds.⁵⁰ If approved, this will be the largest pension fund divestment from a single asset manager over climate concerns in history. NYC pension funds have already cut financed emissions 37% since 2019 and exceeded their climate investment target, reaching $11.9 billion.⁵¹ The recommendation is now pending with new city leadership. If you live in New York City, call the new comptroller’s office and tell them to finish what Lander started.
Divestment is one climate tool. Making polluters pay directly is another.
Vermont and New York’s climate superfund laws survived 2025. Vermont’s law, championed by Senators Dick Sears and Anne Watson and Representative Martin LaLonde, was the first in the nation.⁵² Republican Governor Phil Scott let it become law without his signature.⁵³ New York’s law, sponsored by Senator Liz Krueger and Assemblymember Jeffrey Dinowitz, targets $75 billion in cost recovery over 25 years.⁵⁴ Governor Hochul signed it.⁵⁵ The Department of Justice sued both states. The cases are pending.⁵⁶
Climate policy protects the future. Tenant protections protect people right now.
Minnesota passed what may be the strongest tenant union protections in the country. Senator Zaynab Mohamed and Representative Esther Agbaje authored the legislation.⁵⁷ Governor Tim Walz signed it.⁵⁸ Landlords cannot retaliate against organizing tenants, cannot report immigration status to federal authorities, and face $1,000 fines per violation plus attorneys’ fees.⁵⁹ Tenant organizing in Minnesota has increased exponentially since the law took effect.
Tenant organizing is one front in the housing fight. Banning landlord price-fixing software is another.
Multiple cities and states banned algorithmic rent-setting software. In California, Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry authored AB 325 and Governor Newsom signed it.⁶⁰ In New York, Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal and Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal pushed the ban through and Governor Hochul signed it.⁶¹ San Francisco was the first city to act, with Supervisor Aaron Peskin sponsoring the ordinance.⁶² In Philadelphia, Councilmember Nicolas O’Rourke authored the ban and it passed 17-0.⁶³ In Minneapolis, Councilmember Robin Wonsley led the effort with Councilmembers Jeremiah Ellison and Jason Chavez.⁶⁴ Seattle passed its ban 7-0 with Councilmember Cathy Moore sponsoring.⁶⁵ San Diego passed theirs 8-1, sponsored by Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera.⁶⁶ Connecticut and Berkeley also passed bans.⁶⁷ RealPage, the company whose software allegedly coordinates landlord pricing to keep rents artificially high, is now suing to overturn these bans.⁶⁸ That’s how you know they work. If you live in any of these areas, find those names above and let them know their work matters. If you live elsewhere, tell your city council and state reps to follow suit.
Banning price-fixing keeps rents from rising. But when evictions happen anyway, tenants need lawyers.
Philadelphia expanded right to counsel for evictions, now covering 35% of renters facing eviction.⁶⁹ Councilmember Helen Gym was the original champion, pushing the legislation through in 2019.⁷⁰ No tenant with a lawyer lost by default judgment, compared to over 40% of unrepresented tenants.⁷¹ Citywide eviction filings dropped nearly 40%.⁷²
None of this required permission from Congress. California spent $5 million on federal litigation in 2025 and protected $168 billion in funding, but litigation is defense.⁷³ Everything above is offense.
New York is seizing wage thieves’ assets. California is selling $11 insulin. New Mexico is paying for childcare. Washington is capping rent and paying striking workers. The feds can keep dancing, at least until our Democratic State AGs decide to break out the handcuffs and start prosecuting federal corruption. Feel free to call your State Attorney General and tell them to open investigations into Republican transnational criminal activity.

Great posting, Christopher. I heard Tim Snyder say that he is concerned about a splintering of our nation when blue states start doing their own thing. I understand what he means. Yes, it might be the demise of the US as we know it. But then again, voters in red states might realize that there is a different way of being in community, and then join efforts to move towards a republic with a heart. Now that is the US we want! Our country is only beginning to imagine what we really could become.
