A sizable minority in this country would not mind a christofascist white supremacist theocracy. They rightly feel that they would do just fine under that kind of system. In fact, many red states already, de facto, have this system in place. The rest of us want to maintain a pluralistic constitutional democracy. Compromise between these two factions is not possible. What would it even look like. There can be no soft landing. The resulting conflict between these sides will not end well. The best we can hope for is an eventual split into two new nations. One that carries on the founding principles of this country so well enunciated by Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address. The other devolving into the kind of country that’s yours and mine worst nightmare.

CHRISTOPHER and Everyone:

If you haven't already done so, please read "American Nations: A history of the 11 rival regional cultures of North America" by Colin Woodard, 2011. Not new, but I just found out about it. Fascinating! It's American history going back to our very beginnings, so it's plenty dark but Woodard also gets some humorous touches in there.

American Nations absolutely clarifies why we are where we are. And honestly, I think it is time for a divorce. Which is what I would say to anybody in an abusive marriage. It is delusional to think we can reconcile antagonistic values, and come up with something viable.

Was there a "compromise" possible between Nazis and democracy? No. Or between Soviet or Chinese communists and the western world? No.

This is not a good or comfortable place to be, but it's real. And it's a relief to be able to unpack our situation.
